Evaluation

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN – END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

Digital Module

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Skills- Create a body of research that consisted of using after effects, been able to know the Basic like the silent movie moving shapes and a few effects but able to build at a higher quality near the end of the module for the e4 brief and able to find short cuts or other fast resolutions to the storyboard and test pieces.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

Never really done any storyboarding just like after effects but i did find it enjoyable and helpful planning and playing around my ideas on the storyboard.I found good steps of improving my storyboard to have a good simple high quality storyboard but not to detailed. For example draw sketches on yellow post it notes so you can move them around and change them then another detailed sketch of the resolution and then a neat version to sum up which I created it on photoshop from scanning image and pasting them.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?

strengths are storyboards and illustrations and I'm sure my Patience on the after effects help to create my drawn image on the video.Making fast decisions and plying around on after effects to see if my idea works but not wasting long hours creating it.(head and hands)My i am please what i created on my first try on after effects there is still a lot to learn.Iweb was difficult to produce as it was sometime unpredictable at times. But I have defiantly learnt to be careful on computers to back up every thing,I think I was lucky I didn't loose anything because constantly backup work on disc and my personal hard drive. But there where moments i did loose things (like a drink leaking in my bag and destroyed my usb stick)but even I already back my work up there is this constant fear of loosing work after and during this brief.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?

weaknesses- I don't think I'm a natural at after effects but I know I put 100% into it.I web didn't sometimes agree with me and found it difficult to keep the memory low.But kept it consistant.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. Make my after effects easier (using simple shapes not illustrative images)
2. Practise I web small part rather than doing it all and find out some images don't turn up on publish
3. Took more breaks away from the computer (felt a bit ill staring at the computer all day)
4. Have examples on silent movie
5. Knew what to put on the I web(Not to sure what was important to put in I web and what wasn't important)

6. How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)
5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

12345
AttendanceX= 5
PunctualityX= 5
MotivationX=5
CommitmentX=5
Quantity of work producedX=3
Quality of work producedX=3
Contribution to the groupX=3
The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

neos cafe in Cockermouth

Freeman & Fine Exhibition in Neos, Cockermouth. Cumbria graduates’ exclusive first show.

Exquisite drawings, shadow motion and exclusive video works, can all be seen in artists Rebecca Freeman and Adam Fine’s first solo exhibition, created fresh for Cumbria. Comprised of film, digital video, photography, drawing and print, the show, entitled simply Freeman & Fine, will be held at THE HIP Gallery at Neo’s in Cockermouth, previewing on Friday, January 30th, 2009, and running through to February 28th.

Showcased in this exhibition is the new animation, In you, everything sank. For the filming of this project, Rebecca Freeman traveled from England to Dallas, Texas to meet Adam Fine in November of 2008, spending roughly ten days gathering on-location footage, and filming projected paper cutouts in the laborious process of stop-motion. For this process, they used a vintage Canon super 8 camera, obtained from eBay, and shot on Kodak Vision-3 film, bought in California. Fine’s garage was made into a makeshift studio for the two to complete the six minute and twenty second film. The film, encompassing both stop-motion footage and live-action footage from the US and UK, was transferred to a digital copy for editing purposes. Providing the soundtrack for In you, everything sank, is Courtney Lain and Chad Merritt’s musical project, The High Seas, based in Louisiana.

This animation follows up their first collaborative film, Cemetery of Kisses, which has shown at Carlisle’s “Lowther Arcade Project” in late 2008, and “On Wednesdays, We Draw Monsters”, in June of 2008.

Rebecca Freeman and Adam Fine decided to begin collaborating in late December 2007, while at the Blackfriars Pub, having just left the Tate Modern in London. They both left an exhibition featuring artists including William Kentridge and Kara Walker, thinking they would like to begin producing animation. Freeman, who works primarily in drawing, print, and silhouette, and Fine, who works predominately in film and video installation, discovered that they left the exhibition with the same feeling, whilst discussing the exhibition over their respective pints. Sketches were drawn at their dimly lit table, and they began to work off each others’ strengths to achieve their final means.

Freeman and fine both Graduated from the University Of Cumbria’s Fine Art Course in Carlisle and during their time in the county became very involved in the local art scene and community. Both as students volunteered for FRED and the Carlisle Arts Festival and spent time working in Loweswater. Debbie Taylor, manager of Neo’s is herself a graduate of the former Cumbria Institute of the Arts and set up Neo’s in 2004 with the aim to provide an artist led space, adding to the hub of creativity situated 'over the bridge' in Cockermouth.

Ident Mtv Global Warming

The hand rendered aparoach works well as to relate to global warming.hand made = organic. Cut out shapes 2d structure make it look like its made out of paper.dark colours used very earthy greens, blues, browns and reds.Looks like its crated like a play a performance at a feather for example the cut out waves.

Breakfast revenge club

This is a video that I looked at as an a screen shot from before.Apart from being groom some, the colours work well as it shows character and the sketchy animation and blurred scenes.

Music and story board

I gathered a list of song that are from 2008 and a have a good beat and not much lyrics to make it easier to edit but these are not what I'm going to stick to Its just the start of thinking what I'm going to put in.

Story Board
This is a cleaned up version from my other storyboards.

music videos

Radiohead - Reckoner - by Clement Picon
Fantastic pieces of animation and a moving song. Both blend well a a delicate piece.

Im afraid that i cant show all of it because it is taken off you tube but was able to show the beginng whith some random pic of Justin Timberlake.
But moving on the point im make is about the beginning of the animation. How sleek and the ryth works with the music.

Idents

e4

Still works with the colour purple as it is there treat mark.

Channel 4 Idents

My favourite one is the council flats its very well structured. And the colour works well with the tone of the admosphere.

BBC 2

This is all of 2001-2008 bbc 2 ident. The 2 model is great because it comes a character a lovelable character. But my favourite one is the dog 2.

Skins

here's a good example of using motion and sound together making it more modern.

Series 2:

The music and video works well, short trailer so its edited well to show the mood but does distract the video.

simple 2d video, good humouring the Brits about the Americans

Ideas for music in the stop motion

So because the fashion trends are in 2008 it would be a good idea to find music which i can edit for 30 seconds from 2008.As it makes senses. From looking at the catwalk show they are all very upbeat so I'm looking something which is fun but doesn't distract the video but works well with the stop motion.

These are the top rated sons 2008 from http://rateyourmusic.com

Some of the songs I dont know but would be good to look at. Because its only 30 seconds im going to look at how to edit music.edit the best bits.

Designers ads

Tis is an odd video.potipoti's video animation fall/winter 2006-2007 collection "fabula"

Also odd.But the background music works really again has a good beat.

Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Commercial

Nicole Kidman Chanel No 5: The Film 3 Minute Version

Chanel No.5 - Estella Warren

Seems that channel has softer music rather than the catwalks which a more upbeat.

Rihanna Gucci

Music is really good suits the video makes more carming and soulful. But the video is naf with rihanna pouting her lips and staring. Whats that all about?

Gucci By Gucci: David Lynch

I like the contrast of the video which is glossy and rich all over but having a a british pop band by blonde "heart of glass" for the background music.

Gucci Cruise 2008 Campaign Video

Victoria Secret Fashion Show

Victoria secret is a an underware fashion show but the models and the bands they play mix together as both performances.

music background

Im starting to look at other ads that work well with there ad and the music together.I found a few that works.

Movie trailers will be good to look at

The music at the end works well for the film trailer as its ment to be fast and furious has a good beat i think its by justice.Really good, shame that they have made another one the first one was rubbish.

Fashion Catwalk 2008

Autumn/Winter 2008 - Catwalk Oslo Fashion Week

I'm looking how they film catwalk for shows where the shoot the camera in composition and what music they play what bits do they show.

This fashion basically sums up what fashion has been out this year in 2008.I like the the black background with the flashing lights.effective and sets the tone to the the fashion show.dark and mysteries.A good mixture of music. Recognisable songs

This more about a documentry about the show and a bit about the fashion.

Channel clothes are very simple but feminine.

the beginning

This is my postit notes of my story board very basic but it is very helpful.

Wednesday 14 January 2009

Its eye popping brilliant. So delicatly made and has high quality which is great when when your pushing your self to do the same.

This is also well made not not sure how they create it.

This is simple idea but still would of taken a long time to create. But I am defently thinking of using my stop motion flat and sketchy style.

This is about a program about Dexter.Who works for murder investigations but also kills people aswell.Interesting twist but the stop motion works well using the right typography to show that it is dexter talking and the colour and how the text is formed.

I think Ive already put this up on my other blogger but I think it worth mentioning it again.I this an fantastic idea very simple but effective, being hand rendered.

Monday 12 January 2009

so far on my sketch book best and worse

I found an interesting bunch of facts which made me look at similar research.

these are a few notes categorising the subjects.

I moved one with something more i would be more intersted but have a lack of knowledge, which led to me thinking of fashion how is everywhere thats its a huge industry.i though it would be better to work as it might get to depressing working for such a long time on a brief which is quit depressing.
